The Federal Government has begun the construction of the 90.65-kilometre Kano-Gwarzo-Dayi Federal highway linking Kano and Katsina states.

The contract for the dual carriageway was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in November 2020 at the cost of N62.711 billion with a completion period of 24 months.

A statement on Thursday in Abuja by the Director of Press and Public Relations in the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, Boade Akinola, quoted the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Babangida Hussaini, as saying that the contract was awarded on December 1, 2020, to CGC Nigeria Limited.

Hussaini was represented at the kick-off ceremony by the ministry’s Director of Highways (Northwest), Folorunsho Esan.

The permanent secretary explained that the dual carriageway has three bridges with additional 7.3 meters width and 1.5 metres shoulder width as well as an outer shoulder width of 2.7 metres

The Kano State government had dualised 7.2 kilometres of the road from Bayero University Kano (BUK) axis, from the university’s junction and terminating on the outskirts of Dayi town in Katsina State.

Hussaini said the road would be completed with lane markings, mileposts, signage, adding that the road would last for about 20 years.

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje described the project as gigantic and important with great social and economic benefits for the residents of Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and Kebbi states.

The governor explained that the reconstructed road would also contribute in addressing the security challenges along the area.

He added that as requested by the Federal Government, Kano State government was ready to pay compensation for the facilities and utilities that would be affected by the project.

Ganduje hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for all the projects he brought to Kano State, saying the President had paid back for the massive votes the state’s electorate gave him in the 2019 elections.

Kano North Senator Barau Jibrin said the project was the fulfillment of the promise the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) made to the people of the area during its campaigns before the election.

Executive Director of CGC Nigeria Limited, the construction company handling the contract, Mr. Fan Xiaojing, thanked the Federal and Kano State governments for the project.
